Heat Illness

Sun

We have a heat wave going on this week and August tends to be a hot month also. So a reminder about a couple of conditions you may run into yourself or someone you are with.

When the body is unable to cool off by sweating, heat induced illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke can occur. These are very serious and can sometimes result in death. A person may not even know they are suffering from one of these illnesses, so be aware of the condition of those you are with also.

Symptoms for Heat Exhaustion are: Headaches, Dizziness, lightheadedness, Extreme weakness, profuse sweating, irritability, nausea or vomiting, cramps.

Symptoms for Heat Stroke are: Dry, hot skin with no sweating, rapid pulse, Dizziness, confusion or irrational behavior, seizures or convulsions, loss of consciousness.

To help protect against these drink plenty of fluids especially water. Take breaks in the shade or an air conditioned space. Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothes.

Have a fun and safe summer.
